The best things to do in Turks and Caicos: 12 ways to spend a perfect day

Most of what makes Turks and Caicos famous sits on a shallow, glowing turquoise bank: little cays, sandbars, a reef and a rusting shipwreck, all a short ride from the beach. Here are the twelve things we’d put on any trip, from free afternoons on Grace Bay to iguanas, jet skis and a bar that floats.

Things to do at a glance

  • Where: almost everything starts on Providenciales, from the marinas of Leeward and Turtle Cove.
  • Best for: a first day on the water through the cays, then Grace Bay for a free afternoon.
  • Cost: the beaches and Chalk Sound are free; tours are priced per person, per jet ski or per vehicle, and charters per boat.
  • How long: one to three hours for a tour, four to eight for a private charter.
  • Can you do it with kids? Yes: kayak tours, group trips and jet ski passengers start at age 3.

1. Spend a free afternoon on Grace Bay

Best for: first-timers and lazy afternoons

Is Grace Bay Beach free?

Yes. A little over three miles of white sand, sheltered by the barrier reef, with free public accesses and parking. At its west end, Bight Reef starts a few strokes from the sand, so pack a mask. Our best beaches guide has the rest.

2. Island hop the Caicos Cays

Best for: a different beach every hour

How do you see the Caicos Cays?

By water: no road reaches them. A string of little islands runs from Leeward toward North Caicos, and a boat links them up: a reef, a sandbar, a swim off an empty beach. A half day fits two or three stops; a full day reaches the farther cays. See our island hopping guide.

3. Say hello to 3,000 rock iguanas

Best for: families and wildlife lovers

What is Iguana Island?

Little Water Cay, a nature reserve home to about 3,000 Turks and Caicos rock iguanas, found nowhere else on earth. Boardwalks loop through the scrub, and a small trail fee goes to the National Trust. Arrive by charter, jet ski tour, group trip or clear kayak.

4. Circle the La Famille Express

Best for: the classic photo

Where is the shipwreck in Turks and Caicos?

About two miles off Long Bay, stranded on the shallow Caicos Banks since Hurricane Frances drove her aground in 2004. Rust-red steel in pale blue water makes one of the islands’ great photos, and jet skis, charters and group trips all circle her.

5. Wade out to a sandbar

Best for: little kids and big photos

What is the best sandbar in Turks and Caicos?

Half Moon Bay, the crescent joining Little Water Cay to Water Cay, with a warm, still lagoon on one side and the ocean on the other. Most charters fit a sandbar into a half day. Our Half Moon Bay guide has them all.

6. Snorkel the reef

Best for: turtles, rays and reef fish

Where is the best snorkeling?

On the reefs a boat reaches, off Leeward, Grace Bay and Pine Cay, where turtles, stingrays and eagle rays are common. Snorkel gear comes on every private charter, and the three-hour group trips add the shipwreck and Iguana Island. No certification? Try Snuba.

7. Grab a drink at Noah’s Ark

Best for: a cold drink in the middle of the sea

How do you get to Noah’s Ark?

By water. It’s a bar on a floating platform in the shallows off Little Water Cay, open daily from 10 am until sunset. Most powerboats tie up alongside, and the three-hour jet ski tour ends there with lunch. See our Noah’s Ark guide.

8. Paddle a clear kayak through the mangroves

Best for: a slow, quiet morning

What will you see from a clear kayak?

The water under you, like a window: turtles, stingrays and young sharks are what the guides look for in the mangrove channels. The two-hour tour stays in the mangroves; the three-hour adds Iguana Island. Ages 3 and up.

How old do you need to be to ride a jet ski?

Yes: a 41ft sailing catamaran for up to 12, a 65ft sailing catamaran for up to 20 and a 70ft schooner built by hand in 1992 that takes up to 50. When the wind allows, the crew raises the sails and the engines go quiet. More in our sailing guide.

12. Look over Chalk Sound, then eat at the fish fry

What is free to do in Turks and Caicos?

Drive the road along Chalk Sound, a lagoon of electric turquoise scattered with rocky cays, and climb Sapodilla Hill for the view. On Thursday evenings, the fish fry in the Bight serves fried fish, conch and live music. Entry is free; bring cash for the stalls.
