Hurricane season sounds like a reason to stay home, but it’s a season, not a forecast. It runs for six months, from June 1 to November 30, and charters keep going out right through it, over the warmest water of the year.
So yes, you can book a boat day for a summer or fall trip. Here’s when the season peaks, what happens if the weather turns, and how to book so a change of plans is easy.
Hurricane season at a glance
- The season: June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10; the storms that have hit these islands mostly came between late August and mid-September.
- Best for warm water: August to October, when the sea averages about 84°F (29°C).
- Best for flexibility: a boat you can cancel free up to 24 hours before.
- Best for peace of mind: knowing the rule. If the captain or our team call the day off for weather, you get a full refund or a new date.
- Best for value: late August to early November, when room rates are at their lowest and a free extra night is a common offer.
1. When the season runs, and when it peaks

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. The US National Hurricane Center puts its peak around September 10, with most storms forming between mid-August and mid-October.
Turks and Caicos follows the same pattern: most of the hurricanes that have hit the islands came between late August and mid-September. Across the Atlantic, the early and late months of the season are quieter. And a storm somewhere out in the Atlantic doesn’t make your day a write-off: whether a charter goes out is the captain’s or our team’s call, made for your date.
It’s also when the sea is warmest, about 82°F (28°C) in June and July and about 84°F (29°C) from August to October. That’s the time for long snorkels and lazy swim stops.
Some perspective on the odds. An average season, by the National Hurricane Center’s 1991 to 2020 count, produces 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes across the whole Atlantic, and most of them never come near these islands. In the last two decades only Ike in 2008 and Irma and Maria in 2017 did serious damage here; Fiona in 2022 left minor flooding on Providenciales, and Dorian, Matthew, Beryl, Helene and Milton all passed with no effect at all. If you want a single fortnight to avoid, local advice points at August 31 to September 15. And when a storm is coming, you’ll know about a week out.
The storms people remember
Of the storms that did hit, three stand out. Ike came in from the east as a Category 4, and early on September 7, 2008 its northern eyewall passed directly over Grand Turk, Salt Cay and South Caicos; Grand Turk took the worst of it, with roofs gone across much of the island and the power out everywhere. Nine years later Irma, a Category 5 with winds of 165 mph, passed just south of the Caicos Islands on the night of September 7, 2017, with hurricane conditions across the islands, and two weeks later Maria, a Category 3, passed close to Grand Turk, its center about 30 miles to the north-northeast on the morning of September 22.
The near misses are more typical. In August 2025 Erin brought a tropical storm warning and shelter-in-place advisories; flights and businesses were cleared to reopen on August 19, but boats were asked to hold off until later that week while the seas settled. That October, Melissa, the Category 5 that struck Jamaica on October 28, put these islands under a hurricane watch and then a tropical storm warning. What arrived was a few minutes of light showers, and the all-clear came at 6 am on October 30.
The islands from June to November
June and July are the quiet start of the season, with storms uncommon and the water already warm. Prices fall as the months go on: late August through early November is when room and activity rates are usually at their lowest, and a free extra night is a common resort offer.
The trade-off is that the islands partly close. Quite a few restaurants shut for a few weeks somewhere between late August and November, and some hotels close in September and October to renovate, so check that the places you have in mind are open on your dates.
Flights are the bigger variable. Storms elsewhere in the region delay flights far more often than one hits the islands, and when a storm does threaten, airlines and hotels usually work with guests on changing dates. Each has its own policy, though, which is where travel insurance earns its keep.
The storms that reach Turks and Caicos usually come from the east or southeast after days crossing the open Atlantic, which is why there’s normally a week of warning, and why the sea often stays rough for a day or two after the sky has cleared.

2. If the weather turns

This is the part that matters most. If the captain or our team decide the weather or the sea makes it unsafe to go out, you’ll get a full refund or move your charter to another day. That holds whatever the boat’s cancellation window.
A breezy day isn’t always a canceled day. Your captain can steer toward calmer water when conditions change, and catamarans, riding on two hulls, are noticeably steadier than a single hull. The plan may bend, with a sheltered sandbar in place of an open-water snorkel, and the day goes ahead. Nobody can promise what a storm will do, and we won’t; what we can promise is how the day is handled.
The forecast language is simpler than it sounds. A tropical storm watch means storm-force winds of 39 mph or more are possible in the area within 48 hours; a warning means they’re expected within 36. A hurricane watch and warning work the same way for winds of 74 mph and up. On the ground, the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies runs things: it issues shelter-in-place orders and the all-clear through its alert app and on Radio Turks and Caicos, 89.1 FM, and the airports close before a storm and reopen after the all-clear. No captain goes out under a warning, and a watch is the moment to message us about moving your date.

3. Free cancellation: 24 to 72 hours, depending on the boat

Every charter we offer has its own free-cancellation window, between 24 and 72 hours before you go, and it’s on the listing. Cancel before it, for any reason, and you get a full refund. Before that deadline you can also move your date, free.
The window counts back from your start time, so a 24-hour window on a 9 am charter closes at 9 am the day before. In hurricane season, a shorter window is worth having. The US National Hurricane Center publishes a seven-day outlook of where storms may form, updated every six hours, so a 24-hour window lets you watch the outlook almost to the last day.
Seven charters can be canceled free up to 24 hours before: the 22ft, the 35ft Luxury Yacht, the 44ft Luxury Catamaran Yacht, both Adventure Boats, and the 29ft and 30ft out of South Bank Marina. With a request confirmed within a few hours, nearly always the same day, there’s no prize for booking months out and every reason to pick the boat whose window suits your nerves.

4. Make the most of late summer

Lobster season opens on August 1, and from then on several full-day charters add a catch-and-cook: you free-dive for spiny lobster with the crew, and it becomes part of lunch. It runs on the 22ft’s eight-hour charter, the 26ft’s seven-hour and the eight-hour days on both Adventure Boats, and the 43ft Ultra Luxury Yacht serves lobster at its beach BBQ.
Plan your charter for early in your stay rather than your last day. If the weather does move it, you’ll still have days left to move it to. A half day is the easiest to reschedule, because it fits into a morning or an afternoon.
Our terms cover the charter. Your flights and your hotel have their own, and travel insurers treat a named storm as a known event: a policy bought after the name appears won’t cover that storm, so buy it when you book the trip, not when the forecast turns. Conch is the other seasonal note: the export season is closed from July 15 to October 15, but conch is served on island all year, closed export season or not.

Before you go
Check the outlook in the week before. The seven-day outlook shows what may be coming your way.
Pick your window. A 24-hour free-cancellation window gives you the most room.
Book early in your trip, so a weather day has somewhere to go.
Buy travel insurance when you book the trip, not when a storm has a name.

The boats to book for a storm-season trip
For the most room to change your mind, pick from the charters with a 24-hour window. For a couple of families, the 35ft Luxury Yacht’s four hours are $3,026 all-in for six from Turtle Cove Marina, with an air-conditioned cabin, a bathroom and a shower, snorkel gear, a lunch of glazed ribs, wings, rice, mac and cheese and salad, and beer, wine, champagne and rum punch. For a steadier ride and a bigger party, the 44ft Luxury Catamaran Yacht’s four hours are $5,481 for eight, with two bathrooms and the same lunch. For a crowd, the Adventure Boat’s four hours are $2,054 for nine from Heaving Down Rock Marina, with a waterslide, sandwiches and fruit.
All three can be canceled free up to 24 hours before, the price on each listing includes taxes, a deposit secures the boat, and a request is confirmed within a few hours. If the captain or our team call the day off for weather, you get a full refund or a new date.
