Queen conch in Turks and Caicos: conch hunts, conch salad and the season

The queen conch is on the Turks and Caicos flag and in the islands’ favorite dishes, and on some boat days you can dive for one yourself and eat it as fresh ceviche within the hour. The seagrass flats around Providenciales are conch country, a short ride from the marina.

Queen conch at a glance

  • Where: the seagrass and sandy shallows of the Caicos Banks, outside the national parks.
  • When: all year. There’s no closed season for eating conch; only exports pause, roughly mid-July to mid-October.
  • How to get there: a conch hunt on a group excursion or a full-day private boat charter from Providenciales, or a clear kayak tour to see them in the shallows.
  • Can you take a shell home? Yes, up to three queen conch shells per person, each at least 7 inches long.
  • Best for: families, foodies and anyone who has never tasted conch straight from the sea.

Meet the queen of the seagrass

Best for: curious kids

The queen conch is a large sea snail that grazes on algae in the seagrass and sandy shallows. It can reach 12 inches and five pounds and live 25 to 30 years. Once it’s grown, the shell stops getting longer and that famous pink lip thickens instead. It grows slowly and matures late, at three and a half to four years, which is why the islands protect it with a size limit.

Can you see queen conch without diving?

Yes. On the three-hour clear kayak tour of the mangroves and Iguana Island, conch are among the wildlife in the shallows right below your hull.

Taste it fresh: conch salad and more

Best for: foodies

Conch salad is the islands’ ceviche: raw conch, diced and cured in citrus. For conch fritters, cracked conch and chowder, the meat is pounded tender before it’s cooked. The flavor is mild and the texture firm, somewhere between squid and clam, and it tastes best eaten a few feet from where it was found.

Which boat trips serve conch?

On a few of our full days, conch is part of lunch. The eight-hour days on the Adventure Boat, the Adventure Boat XL and the 43ft Ultra Luxury Yacht serve fresh conch ceviche, the 22ft Sports Cruiser’s eight-hour and the 26ft Regal’s seven-hour can add conch salad on request, and on the 51ft and 62ft yachts cracked conch is on the menu in season. Our boat charters with lunch guide has every menu.

Dive for your own on a private charter

Best for: groups who want a full day

Three charters build a conch hunt into their full day: the eight-hour days on the Adventure Boat, the Adventure Boat XL and the 43ft Ultra Luxury Yacht. You snorkel the shallows with the crew, then they turn what you find into fresh ceviche. On most other boats you can ask for conch, and the captain decides on the day.

Is a conch hunt guaranteed?

No. It depends on the day, and conch may only be taken outside the national parks and nature reserves, which cover much of Providenciales’ north coast, so the captain picks the spot.

Hunt conch with the whole family

Best for: families with kids 3 and up

For a family, the easiest conch hunt is the three-hour Seaside Scavenger Quest, one of our group excursions. You search the shallows for queen conch, learn to make ceviche with what you find, explore uninhabited cays and hunt for seashells and sand dollars, with a few pirate tales along the way.

When does the conch hunt tour run?

Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 9:30 am from Heaving Down Rock Marina in Leeward, for ages 3 and up. Snorkel gear, snacks and drinks are included.

Take conch home the right way

  • Three shells each. Up to three queen conch shells per person leave without a permit, in checked luggage, each at least 7 inches long.
  • Leave the little ones. A shell under 7 inches is a juvenile and gets taken at the airport.
  • Leave the living ones. A shell with the animal inside goes back on the grass where it was grazing.
  • Meat is limited. Up to 10 pounds per person can leave with a permit from the fisheries department, never in the summer export pause.

Make a day of it from Provo

A full day is the conch day: more time on the water, a hunt in the shallows and lunch on a beach. In season, the same full days catch lobster too: see our lobster season guide, and our sand dollars and shells guide has the rest of the beachcombing. There are plenty of ways to go: a private boat charter, a group excursion or a clear kayak tour. If you’d like a boat of your own, pick it below.

Questions guests ask us

When is conch season in Turks and Caicos?
There’s no closed season for catching and eating conch locally, so you can enjoy it all year. Only exports pause, roughly mid-July to mid-October, when conch meat and juvenile shells can’t leave the country.
Can you go conch hunting in Turks and Caicos?
Yes, outside the national parks and reserves. The eight-hour days on the Adventure Boat, Adventure Boat XL and 43ft Ultra Luxury Yacht include a conch hunt, and the Seaside Scavenger Quest is a three-hour group tour built around one.
Can I take a conch shell home from Turks and Caicos?
Yes, up to three queen conch shells per person without a permit, each at least 7 inches long and packed in checked luggage. More than three, even from a shop, needs an export permit from the environment department on Providenciales.
What does conch taste like?
Mild and slightly sweet, with a firm texture somewhere between squid and clam. Conch salad serves it raw and cured in citrus, while fritters, cracked conch and chowder use meat pounded tender and cooked.
Is queen conch endangered?
The United States listed it as threatened in 2024, and its trade is regulated under CITES. Overfishing is the main threat, which is why Turks and Caicos keeps a size limit and pauses exports every summer.
