Find a southern stingray in the sand
Best for: waders and kids

The southern stingray is the one you’re most likely to meet. Its diamond-shaped body is olive-brown to gray on top and white underneath, and it spends much of its life on the sand, stirring up the bottom with its fins to uncover crabs, shrimp and small fish, or burying itself to hide. It’s usually alone or in pairs, and the females grow much bigger than the males.
Are stingrays dangerous in Turks and Caicos?
No. Stingrays are calm and not aggressive. The barb on the tail is for defense, and a ray uses it when someone steps on it, which is easy to avoid.

Best for: snorkelers

Spotted eagle rays are the ones that make snorkelers point. They’re dark on top, covered in white spots and rings, with a long, whip-like tail, and the biggest measure nine feet or more from wingtip to wingtip. Rather than resting on the sand, eagle rays swim, flapping their wide fins like wings, often in small groups. They feed on shellfish such as clams and whelks, crushing the shells with their teeth.
Where can you see eagle rays in Turks and Caicos?
Snorkelers see them over the reefs inside the barrier reef, and divers meet them cruising the walls off Northwest Point. On a private charter, your captain picks the reef for the day’s conditions.

Follow the sand around Providenciales
Best for: planning the perfect stop

Rays follow the sand. Around Providenciales, southern stingrays are seen on the sand flats on the south side of Little Water Cay, in the mangrove channels, and in the clear water under the cliffs at Split Rock, at the island’s southwest point. Most charters leave from Leeward, right at the edge of the Caicos Cays, so the sandbars and shallow flats are a short ride away.
How do you see both kinds of ray in one day?
Mix a sandbar with a reef stop. The stingrays keep to the sand and the eagle rays to the reef, so a day with both covers their favorite water. Our Half Moon Bay guide and Split Rock guide have the details of each spot.

Glide over them by kayak or jet ski
Best for: anyone who’d rather stay dry

In a clear kayak, you look straight down on the rays. Both mangrove tours look for stingrays, and in the shallow channels you can watch one glide right under the hull. Children from age 3 can come along, and both tours leave from Heaving Down Rock Marina in Leeward, where every jet ski tour starts too.
Can you see stingrays on a jet ski tour?
Yes, from the seat. On our jet ski tours, the two-hour Caicos Cays Tour watches for stingrays as you ride past Half Moon Bay and Little Water Cay, and the three-hour Ultimate Seafari looks for them in the shallows of the south coast before lunch at Noah’s Ark, the floating bar. Each ski takes up to two riders.

Make a day of it from Provo
Rays are here all year. A half day fits a sandbar and a reef stop, and a full day adds more of both with lunch along the way. They share the shallows with turtles and young lemon sharks: our sea turtle guide and shark guide have the rest of the cast. There are plenty of ways to go: a private boat charter, a clear kayak tour or a jet ski tour. If you’d like a boat of your own, pick it below.
