Things to do with kids in Turks and Caicos: calm beaches, iguanas and clear kayaks

Picture a bay so shallow you can wade far out from the sand, an island run by 3,000 iguanas and a kayak you can see straight through. Turks and Caicos is warm, clear and calm, which makes Providenciales one of the easiest places in the Caribbean to bring the kids.

Turks and Caicos with kids at a glance

  • Best for: babies to teens. Most tours start at age 3, and private charters have no minimum age.
  • Free and easy: the calm, shallow bays on the south shore of Providenciales.
  • Can’t-miss: Iguana Island, a clear kayak through the mangroves and a sandbar stop.
  • How to get there: everything starts in Providenciales. Kayak and group tours meet in Leeward, with a $20 round-trip shuttle from the Grace Bay area.
  • Kids’ prices: the group and clear kayak tours have a child price for ages 3 to 12.

Splash in a bay with no waves

Best for: babies, toddlers and a free afternoon

Taylor Bay, where the water stays shallow and calm far out from the sand.

On the south shore of Providenciales, near Chalk Sound, Taylor Bay is sheltered from the trade winds by a small peninsula, and its water stays very shallow and calm. Toddlers can wade, sit and splash without a wave in sight. Sapodilla Bay next door is just as gentle, a little busier, with rocks at one end where older kids can snorkel.

Which beach is best for toddlers in Turks and Caicos?

Taylor Bay and Sapodilla Bay, both calm and shallow and both free. Our best beaches guide has the rest of the island’s sand.

Paddle a clear kayak over baby sharks

Best for: kids 3 and up who love animals

A clear kayak turns the sea into a window. On the two-hour mangrove tour, a local guide leads you through the channels while kids look straight down for turtles, stingrays and young sharks gliding under the hull. Double kayaks carry two, so a parent and a small child can share one.

How old do kids have to be for a clear kayak tour?

Three. Both clear kayak tours take paddlers from age 3, with a child price up to age 12, and the safety equipment and a guide come with every tour. The three-hour tour adds a landing on Iguana Island.

Say hello to 3,000 iguanas

Best for: wildlife-mad kids

Little Water Cay, just past Leeward, is better known as Iguana Island. About 3,000 Turks and Caicos rock iguanas live there and nowhere else on earth, and a boardwalk lets kids watch them sunning on the sand from a few feet away. It’s part of a national park, so the iguanas stay wild and the island stays quiet.

How do you get to Iguana Island with kids?

By water. The three-hour clear kayak tour lands there, the group snorkel and Snuba tours end there, two of our jet ski tours ride past it, and most private charters can stop. Our Iguana Island guide has more.

Hunt for conch like a pirate

Best for: kids who like a mission

The Seaside Scavenger Quest is built for families. Over three hours kids hunt for queen conch in the shallows, then help turn their catch into fresh conch ceviche. In between there are uninhabited cays to explore, shells and sand dollars to look for and pirate tales of buried treasure from the guides.

What is there to do with kids on a boat in Turks and Caicos?

Plenty: the conch hunt, the Snorkel, Shipwreck & Iguana tour with lunch on board, and a Snuba tour that lets older kids breathe underwater with no certification. All three group tours take ages 3 and up, with a child price to age 12.

Kids can’t drive a jet ski alone, but they can ride. The one-hour run out to the La Famille Express shipwreck makes a perfect first ride.

Can kids ride a jet ski in Turks and Caicos?

Yes, as passengers from age 3 on the group tours, two to a ski. From 16 they can drive solo. Keep watch on the way out: turtles, rays and sometimes dolphins swim along.

Make a family day of it from Provo

With little ones, a private charter is the easiest way onto the water: no minimum age, life jackets in every size, and a route that follows the kids, from a calm sandbar to the iguanas. Our family boat charter guide compares the boats, things to do with teens covers the older crew, and age limits puts every rule in one place. If you’d like your own private boat charter, pick it below.
